The Secret of Getting Up
It’s not a secret, just do it
No, it’s not coffee, though if you like the stuff it can help immediately after the getting up part.
The secret? It’s annoyingly simple.
Actually physically getting out of bed once you decide to. Whether that be when your alarm sounds or when your body wakes on its own that first time.
NOT after you hit snooze multiple times or you just turn over for the 4th time since you originally woke because the motion of getting up is to hard to bare.
I have this issue. Even with the perfect amount of sleep for my body I struggle immensely with the actual act of rising in the morning.
Last night I set myself with the goal of 5am and I went to bed much too late but I told myself that I would get up and use this as a catalyst to better mornings overall even though I knew I would be tired much of the day.
My only issue for this wake-up though?
I didn’t hear my alarm, I suppose I was much more in my sleep zone at 5am than I had known because at 5:29 am I checked my clock and realized my alarm was tired of me not listening and had stopped making any sound.
So what did I do?
I had a little mental battle with my brain and then I got up. I was sitting at my desk by 5:40 writing my morning pages with an iced coffee because I took the time last night to bring all the things I needed for one upstairs.
I don’t live alone and the extra act of going down to the kitchen is a giant issue sign in my way of actually doing the thing, I need to bring the things that I want or need within easy reach.
If I was a hot coffee drinker I have the option of a small keurig upstairs also, this might come into play when winter shows up with hot chocolate on tap. Though if it made sense I’d probably choose to drink that on ice also…
Are you struggling with getting up?
Like, the actual thing. Doing the thing, it’s freaking hard!
Mel Robbins wrote “The 5 Second Rule”, it’s full great ideas if you need some and you can will yourself to… Do. The. Thing. With a countdown. That work for some of us.
I’ve tried it, maybe it could work for me if I kept trying it. But gosh I still struggle.
A count down should be exciting and in my head “easy”. If only my head worked like that.
Ideas for you to try
So, the 5 second rule may work for you, try it if you haven’t, get the book. Listen to one of Mel’s podcasts on the subject.
Other ideas though
- Get a morning light clock that will gradually brighten as it gets closer to your alarm. It is also called a sunrise clock.
- Have your alarm on the other side of the room or maybe in your closet or bathroom as long as you can still hear it and it’s annoying enough to get you out of bed.
- Make a list of what you’re getting up for, have a plan. This can make a huge difference if you actually have a purpose for your morning wake up.
Early mornings or even consistent morning wake ups aren’t always simple. Depending on you and especially if you’re me.
But we can do this.
Remember, the secret of getting up isn’t a secret. It’s just a matter of doing it, that also doesn’t mean it’s easy either.
